Key InsightsIn August 2026, Sandra King and Andi took a retreat at Sipi Falls in Uganda, enjoying the scenery and quiet time with the Lord. Sandra personally delivered a rewritten letter to the Anglican Bishop, praying for God's will. They are also seeking a new four-bedroom house for 600,000 Ugandan shillings or less due to their current housing situation on the Kumi Hospital grounds. Please pray for a suitable new home and for the hospital's water supply as they face water rationing.

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ.
Thank you all for your prayers. Andi and I have now had a very full month of work here in Uganda, so we recently took two days away to recharge and spend some quiet time with the Lord.
A Retreat at Sipi Falls
After a month of work, Andi and I took a two-day break and drove about an hour and a half into the mountains to Sipi Falls. The area is known for its three large waterfalls flowing from Mt Elgon, and the scenery is quite spectacular, with lush green hills, coffee plantations and crops of maize, onions, bananas and Irish potatoes thriving in the cooler climate.

For me, it was a wonderful retreat. I spent the quiet time praying, listening to the Lord and giving thanks for all things. I found myself simply looking at the flowers and trees and thinking about how beautifully they have been made by the hand of our God. It was a real opportunity to get back to the grass roots and appreciate the beauty of God's creation. I did very little other than pray and rest in the Lord, while Andi enjoyed getting out and doing some of the tourist activities.

A Meeting with Bishop Michael
The letter to the Anglican Bishop was rewritten and printed, and I took it to him personally. Before giving it to him, I laid my hands on the letter and prayed that all of God's will would be done and that anything that was not from Him would not stand.
We are going to make an appointment to see the Right Reverend Bishop Michael, as soon as we hear back from him about the letter.
Our Housing Situation
I have been praying long and hard about our situation here on the Kumi Hospital grounds. The house we are currently staying in is for international students, who are due to return in October. This means we will need to move out and find another four-bedroom house.
Please pray that we will find the right place for 600,000 Ugandan shillings or less.
The hospital is also operating with water rations. Our water supply comes from a lake approximately 2.5 kilometres away, and everyone is charged 30,000 UGX per month to cover the power required to pump the water from the lake. However, if someone is unable to pay this amount, there is a risk that the water supply could be cut off altogether.
As we consider running a home for children, we know that our water usage would be at least double that of an ordinary household. We are not comfortable with the thought of being governed in this way, so we are prayerfully reconsidering what the Lord wants us to do.
Proverbs 16:9 - In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.
Considering the Old Orphanage Site
Our thoughts are currently turning towards reconsidering a new build, still on the hospital grounds but at the site of the old orphanage. There is already a foundation there, and we have also found two water tanks in the ground. We will look into locating the borehole and having the water tested.
We are now in the process of obtaining a quote for a new build using the old orphanage foundations.
While we were on our retreat, I met the local Reverend, who has a builder in his congregation. The two of them are planning to come down to walk over the site with us and discuss the possible building and a perimeter fence.
2 Samuel 7:5 -
“Go and tell my servant David,
‘This is what the LORD says: Are you the
one to build me a house to dwell in? ...”
People Joining the Work
We have now employed two guards, one for the day and one for the night. They are doing a great job. They feed themselves and keep busy planting vegetables—and now they want chickens! I told them we are not settled yet. Whatever next!

We have also employed a young woman called Kevin, who is sewing for us. She is working on uniforms for staff, dresses for the girls, and shirts and shorts for the boys.
1 Chronicles 12:18 - Then the Spirit came on Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said:
“We are yours, David! We are with you, son of Jesse! Success, success to you, and success to those who help you, for your God will help you.”
So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands.

An Office in Kumi
We are looking at getting an office in the centre of Kumi township. Alternatively, we may find a house with an outside room that could be used as an office.
The office will have aprons and shopping bags made by our sewing lady, along with my books, coffee beans and other products to sell. The proceeds from these sales will go towards the orphanage.
This week, we have had at least two people a day coming for interviews for the many positions that are available. We want to take our time and find good people who are right for the work.
Calling People to Help
We have created a flyer calling people to come and help in God's work. We have attached the flyer for you to print and distribute at your church.

The Stolen Money and New Passport
I mentioned in the last newsletter that my passport and 7,000,000 Ugandan shillings were stolen. Praise the Lord someone was available to sign for my new passport that I have now received from New Zealand.
I still pray that the 7,000,000 shillings will be found and returned. When I told the Lord about this, I felt Him say that He would return it a hundred thousand times to me. So I have left it in His hands.
Boniface has been back to the police station to ask about the money. When I went previously, I was asked for a bribe to help find it, but I said no and left. Boniface has now asked about the money and passport again, but there has been no response.
Seeking the Right People
We will be writing to all the main churches here—the Baptist, P&G, Anglican and Catholic churches—asking them to help us find people who may be willing to come and help.
Those people will first be screened by the local clergy and then come here for an interview with Peter, Boniface, Andi and me.
After the interviews, we plan to give the shortlisted people two to three days' notice. We know that advertising on radio and in the papers could create a huge response, with many people wanting to apply for work. We will therefore work carefully through the list. It may take time, but we need good people.
More from Sipi Falls

Andi really enjoyed her time at Sipi Falls. There are three waterfalls, and the walk to them took her through the village and surrounding farmland. By the time she reached the third waterfall, she decided to take a shortcut! The 100-metre abseiling route offered a rather adventurous way down, followed by a boda boda motorbike ride back to the retreat.
She was very brave, and we came back with some great photos. We also had close-up encounters with chameleons. We saw them in many different colours depending on which plants they were sitting on. I learned that you can tell the difference between a male and female by the shape of the neck.

The temperature was considerably lower up the mountain. Down in Kumi, the temperature averages around 29°C, but up the mountain it felt much more like the weather we had left behind in New Zealand.
While we were there, we found a place selling coffee beans and bought a good supply.
Andi came back with a head cold and was treated by the doctor at the hospital. Thankfully, she has improved now.
